Nature
vs. Nurture Research has shown that as we age, our genetic heritage slowly replaces much of the influence of our cultural heritage. In the Nature-Verses-Nurture wars, we start off with more or less balanced influences from both nature and nurture. For most of us, basic cultural imperatives such as language, diet, attire, habitat, religion, etc. remain with us for our entire lives. After all, it is a lot easier to go along with the crowd. We eat whatever is around and easy. We communicate with whatever language everyone around us is using. We worship whatever gods have been passed on to us by our ancestors. As we age and mature, some of us question that which we have been given by the culture, by our parents, by our teachers, by our religious leaders, by our history. How well we compete with one another within the bounds of our culture, is principally determined by our genetic heritage. Try as it may, society cannot make a "silk purse out of a sows ear!" That doesn't stop a lot of well meaning people from trying. It took me a long time to understand why the benefits of the Head Start preschool for disadvantaged kids program lost their impressiveness after the kids reached adulthood. "Dumb kids" got their head start, but fell back to being the dumb adults preordained by their genetics. That is something no one wants to hear! |
