Hello from Big Bear Lake again,
Arriving late yesterday
in Shenzhen a quick selection of the conveniently located Railway
Station Hotel made it possible to jump across the "international"
border into Hong Kong for a fast train ride out to the new modern
Hong Kong International Airport where some quick and fancy foot work
resulted in flight reservation changes for a departure later in that
same day.
The stock market began it's 2008 crash almost
immediately after my return, though I blissfully remained unaware of
the cataclysm engulfing the world's financial markets for several
months until the full dimensions of the catastrophe became obvious
to everyone. Over the next several months I watched as my modest
stocks and bonds portfolio declined in value more than forty
percent! Helpless to change the course of my financial misfortunes I
waited until the worst turned around and most of my paper loss
recovered in value, though the partial recovery took more than five
years and still has a way to go before I can claim full recovery.
This "debriefing"
postcard is being written three years after the fact as I
polish up the China trip postcards.
