Hello from a really remote place in China,
This is an auxiliary page for the large number of photos associated with this Guoliang Tunnel segment of my explorations this year.
"Navigating my way to the legendary "Long Corridor in the Cliff" in
Guoliang China turned out to be more of an adventure than seeing
the tunnel itself after returning from my death defying climb of
Huashan. Without Chinese back in Xi'an for a few days, buying a bus ticket required a
series of bystander interventions. Nearly every crowd has at least
one English language student in it and they are ALWAYS anxious to
practice with a native speaker: "May I help you?". That is fortunate
for me as my collection of understandable Chinese phrases is still
minuscule... but slowly growing. Crowds of people jostling one
another in the main long distance Xi'an bus terminal made getting a
ticket to Lingbao problematic. Fortunately, a visit to the bus
station the night before flushed out a charming, young
female employee anxious to be of help with my language problem. As
tickets were only available on the day of the trip, she would
personally assist me the following morning with booking two adjacent
seats on the left, shady side of the bus. "Just ask for Gao Jin and
I'll help you tomorrow." she assured me... and she did..."
excerpted from the main Guoliang Tunnel
postcard page.

Lingbao: Two cute kids playing with each other and
totally oblivious to everything else until their mother alerted them to the
strange white haired monster lurking nearby.
Lingbao: The high school age girl demonstrated an excellent command of
classroom English and delighted a gathering crowd of curious people as she
discussed current events in her little town, pausing now and then to
translate for the others who had never encountered a foreigner before. The
two little girls also were studying English and demonstrated a keen interest
in this native speaker.
Lingbao: Part of the buffet breakfast provided by the Xin He Hotel. The $21
room rate included a quite substantial Chinese breakfast... of course, that
is not saying much.

Lingbao: Breakfast dining room in the Xin He Hotel. Throughout China large
tables with a central "lazy susan" are expected to be shared... by
everybody, native or foreigner!
Lingbao: Pee boy sculpture along the walk near the Xin He Hotel.
Lingbao: Exercise equipment in use along the walk near the Xin He Hotel. A
close inspection revealed the contraptions could give every muscle group a
workout, if all were used.

People were going from one machine to another as I watched... and getting a
good workout.

Olympics... very auspicious.

entrance to a newly opening store.

served with salads.
