1 March 2003 Hello from Yala Thailand. Leaving Hat Yai at 11:15 the train arrived in tiny, mostly Muslim Yala mid-afternoon. Searching for a place to stay looked easy as there seemed to be only one hotel in the city center area. The Yala Rama Hotel is far from luxury, but at only $7.20 cash and for only one night and with little else from which to choose, seemed to be an acceptable compromise. The next morning I grabbed a 3rd class sixty-cent train toward the Thai-Malaysia line where the actual border has been effectively hidden from arriving train passengers. On the way down we passed through long sections of dense jungle.
