Colombo: Meet Kanchana Pelpola on the left and Parithra on the right, two of the very helpful staff members in the government Information Office next to the Sumadra Hotel I called home for a week while in Colombo.

Colombo: This is one of the 28 passenger minibuses that go to Anuradhapura. Many are air conditioned like this one, but all appear to be the small 28 passenger variety. Fare is 540Rs per seat (About $4). There are more than 5 departures everyday and the trip takes 8 hours... or 5 hours, depending who you ask.

Colombo: This is the boarding area at the main bus station for the Anuradhapura bound buses. Many are air conditioned, but all appear to be the small 28 passenger variety. Fare is 310Rs per seat (About $2). There are more than 5 departures everyday and the trip takes three and a half hours... or 5 hours, depending who you ask. (Seems like a long tome to drive only a little over a hundred miles.)

Colombo: Looking down on the boarding platform in the main railroad station.

Colombo: I found this Slave Island sign at a police station curios and photographed it as a reminder to do some research into the island's role in the slave trade... if any.

Colombo: This is the alleyway entrance into the YMCA Restaurant where I had my lunch and did some email work. On the other side of the building is the hotel entrance where I discovered air-conditioned rooms available for $50!

Colombo: As I wandered around to the entrance side of the YMCA Hotel building I discovered this bulletin board next to the entry door. Inside at the reception desk I discovered air-conditioned rooms available for $50!

Colombo: During one of my daily walks I spotted the YMCA Restaurant and wandered in to have a look. Cafeteria style, the dishes on display looked appetizing and healthy, so I selected a plate of perfectly undercooked vegetables and had my lunch there. On a hunch, I tried the WiFi as the service in my hotel failed to offer reliable connectivity. To my surprise, the signal in the YMCA came on strong and high speed! So, while munching my cabbage and carrots I did some email work.

6 December 2013

Greetings from Colombo,

Here are the rest of the photos taken during my December 2013 visit to Colombo Sri Lanka.  FB

Colombo: Inspirational message seen on a wall along the main railroad tracks... in three languages: Tamil, Sinhala and English.

Colombo: It is so hot here that everyone is tempted to sleep through the afternoon... even these dogs.

Colombo: I think this is an example of "Wandering Jew," a common ground cover plant found around the world... but, this specimen seems to be reaching for the sky instead of "wandering" while hugging the ground. It must be a different variety than commonly grows in America.

Colombo: Some posters I discovered on a wall in one of the suburbs of Colombo.

Colombo: Piles of fresh bananas on offer by this seller. Part of a market I stumbled on in a neighborhood commercial area along the Bus 177 line.

Colombo: "How much for this fine bunch of bananas?" Part of a market I stumbled on in a neighborhood commercial area along the Bus 177 line.

Colombo: A bed of bright green leaves makes a striking display and might serve as a background for some future artistic endeavor. Unfortunately this photograph doesn't do justice to the color I saw so impressive in the bright sunlight.

Colombo: World Trade Center low fat frozen yogurt stand where I "cheated" just a bit on my diet to enjoy something approaching a dish of ice cream... only 2% fat... but a deadly load of sugar, no doubt. Yum.

Colombo: Inspirational message seen on a wall along the main railroad tracks... in three languages: Tamil, Sinhala and English. Several of these aphorisms are paraphrasing of the Buddha... perhaps they all are.

Colombo: Reference photo of the author with the Hilton Hotel next to the twin towers of the World Trade Center just out of the picture to the left in the background. Hey, I can't get everything right!

Colombo: Hilton Hotel next to the twin towers of the World Trade Center in the Fort area of Colombo.

Colombo: These three cannons face the Indian Ocean to deter any naval assault on the island. The old British parliament building is off to the right out of the picture. The monkey and his feeder are enjoying the shade while there are few tourists to entertain.

Colombo: Large sitting Buddha sculpture in the Sri Sambuddhaloka Vihara Buddhist Temple near the Hilton Hotel. Everyone is required to show respect for the holy monument by removing their shoes.

Colombo: This lonely flag pole flies the Sri Lanka colors on a breezy day with the Indian Ocean in the background.

Colombo: View of the Colombo City Hotel from across the street in front of the World Trade Center.

Colombo: Unusual sculpture standing in a grassy road divider park.

Colombo: On my last day in Colombo I had the fancy $16 buffet in the Hilton Hotel. This is my view of the water garden while dining; lovely.

Colombo: I have no idea who the subject of the golden statue is, but he must have something to do with railroads, considering the main railroad station in behind him.

Colombo: Today it the last day of the year, 2013 and the capital police are out in force as everyone prepares for the New Year's eve celebrations on the beach.
