SmallBook5 March 2001

Greetings from peaceful Fethiye.

Fethiye in the extreme southwest corner of Turkey is a town where turtledoves compete with the roosters and muezzins early every morning. The dawn call to prayer is handled a bit more sensibly here in this part of the country. The guys recruited for the morning tower yells might have had vocal training as they rely on lung power alone to make themselves heard.

This is a town not unlike Santa Barbara in many respects. There are mountains to the north and a sea to the south. There are even islands just off the coast. There is an active marina with sailing vessels coming and going all the time. Most of the shops here cater to tourists.

Things are cheap: my excellent value first class hotel costs 15 million Turkish Lira (about 18 dollars at today's exchange rate). A wonderful meal with drinks and desert might cost 6 or 7 dollars.

Ancient ruins of Telmessos, are scattered throughout the town, including a Greek amphitheater only discovered and excavated a few years ago. Roman tombs sit right in the middle of roads giving the modern city a quirky ambiance.

Peace,
Fred L Bellomy

Fethiye Turkey: Here is one of the little guys that try to compete with the turtle doves early every morning to drown out the call of the muezzins around six AM.

Fethiye Turkey: Hotel Mara where I stayed most of the time. A three star house: they had first class accommodations. The cost? 18 dollars per night.

Fethiye Turkey: View from my hotel window: Hotel Mara.

Fethiye Turkey: Everyone takes life easy here.

Fethiye Turkey: Information about the amphitheater recently discovered and excavated.

Fethiye Turkey: This is one of the policemen who became very interested in my little PenCam camera. No one spoke English and this guy turned out to be Iraqi. He shook my hand, but made it clear through his body language something was amiss.

Fethiye Turkey: Suddenly we had the entire police station including the boss man in plain clothes out to inspect my digital camera.

Fethiye Turkey: Overflow congregation at the mosque for Friday services.

Fethiye Turkey: One of the many downtown masques.

Fethiye Turkey: A domed building like this turned out to be a steam bath in another city, but this one is specifically labeled a Turkish Bath.

Fethiye Turkey: Another of the back alleyways so common throughout the city.
