Greetings from Sucre Bolivia:

On this page you will find the rest of the photos taken during my sojourn in this charming South American city nestled high in the Andes where visitors must daily sip coca leaf tea to tolerate the high 9000 foot altitudes... right along with the locals who have done so for centuries.

Also known as La Plata, Charcas and Ciudad Blanca (White City), Sucre could well be a Sister City for any number of Southern California towns with all its old whitewashed colonial buildings hiding cavernous courtyards, numerous airy plazas, modern well dressed residents and affluent tourists. While it is a World Heritage site, it could also be the poster city for for a campaign to focus attention on the huge gulf between the rich and poor in the country.

Peace,
Fred L Bellomy

Sucre Bolivia: Ugly thorn buses used as highway obstacles. Bus ride from Potosi to Sucre stopped abruptly when it ran into another highway blockade; this time twenty miles to our destination and planned to last until tomorrow. A five kilometer stretch of road was closed with obstacles like this.

Sucre Bolivia: At the other end of the blocked section of road I came upon this peaceful gathering of protestors. Nearby police did not interfere.

Sucre Bolivia: At the other end of the blocked section of road I I found the traffic backed up in the other direction. Another kilometer after that several taxis waited for desperate passengers willing to pay 25 Bolivianos for a ride into the city some 15 Kilometers further on. I paid.

Sucre Bolivia: AeroSur airline so badly messed up my connections to Sucre I wanted this photo to remind me of the fiasco. To get to Sucre from Cochabamba they routed me back through Santa Cruz. The connecting flight was not listed on the departure board and AeroSur told me the flight left from the small domestic airport some twenty miles to the south. That turned out to be wrong, but something I only discovered after making the round trip goose chase.
