Mostar and the Old Bridge
Mostar Bosnia-Herzegovina: This lovely old historical bridge sat in ruins at the time of my visit, destroyed in the war. Some years after my visit in 1998 the Croatians restored it to the condition seen in this stock photo taken sometime after the turn of the millennium.

Most of my photos were taken with the tiny Minox-B "spy" camera, which  unfortunately has very low resolution, but is convenient for a world traveler.

14 February 1998

Hello from Mostar Bosnia-Herzegovina,

"No guns" sign at entrance to the four star Ero Hotel where I stayed a couple nights.

War damage to many buildings.

Death notices posted on telephone poles: green borders for Muslims and black for Christians.

Funeral high mass while helicopter gun ships hovered over the town as I watched.

Bus ticket on other side of river: Serb ticket seller says "They are not like us." and then the hotel receptionist said the same thing about the Serb people. They all looked alike to me.

Real-estate guy told me his story about assassinations and grenade attack on his house: roof blown off.

UN peace keeping mission (SFOR) had Spanish soldiers stationed throughout the city supported by armored personnel carriers.

Bus to Dubrovnik stopped reroute and someone pulled off and everyone's papers checked.

Famous ancient bridge destroyed in the war still out of commission.

Peace

Fred L Bellomy

Minox-B "spy" camera I used while traveling during the last millennium. It is a beautiful piece of German technology and a pleasure to fondle. Unfortunately, the resolution of even snapshots is not very good. The chain/lanyard contains beads used for precisely measuring distance to secret documents the agent is trying to photograph!
