Jordan - Tombs like this one are carved into the cliff faces all around the Petra canyon.

These low resolution photos came from scanned paper prints of color photos taken with my Minox B "spy" camera.

Hello from Petra Jordan

I'm sure I took some photos while touring this remarkable place. I found a hotel right outside the main gate leading down into the monument and stayed there two or three nights. The pictures could be either the low resolution Pencam variety or possible film photos; I don't remember. At the time I visited there was only one decent looking hotel located at the very entrance to the park. Today it is called the Moevenpick and that may have been what it was called back then as well, though today rates start at around US$200! At some point I'll need to check my old notes and augment this story... and embellish most of the photo captions.

Peace

Jordan - Petra and the first major structure one sees when exiting the steep winding canyon entryway. Toward the far end of the crowd I spotted a couple teenagers and tried to catch up with them to better read the words written on one of their T-shirts. The top words read: "The only thing" The next line read: "worth dying for is." When I finally got close enough to read the last line in small letters I saw it read: "LIVING!" Being in the tumultuous middle east and the boys being of military age, the experience made a profound impression on me. I never learned if they were Muslim or Jewish.

Need to scan paper photos and add to this page.

Jordan - Looking down into the valley which runs through the Petra archeological park.

Jordan - One of the security guards at the entrance to the Petra archeological park. We chatted for a while, exchanging details of our respective lives and activities.

Minox-B "spy" camera I used while traveling during the last millennium. It is a beautiful piece of German technology and a pleasure to fondle. Unfortunately, the resolution of even snapshots is not very good. The chain/lanyard contains beads used for precisely measuring distance to secret documents the agent is trying to photograph!
