Left Ayutthaya at 8AM by train and switched to the
air conditioned DRC service at Lop Buri which got me into Chiang Mai
about 8PM. The
Pornping
Hotel at $31 seemed like a pretty good value and I stayed there for
the first three nights. On one of my exploratory walks I discovered the
4 star
Lotus Hotel and moved over there for my last five days in the city.
The Lotus Hotel is integrated with a large shopping mall, making it both
convenient and interesting for wasting time. Both hotels I used and all
of the tourist infrastructure are outside the old city walls, so I got
some extra exercise every time I wanted to explore inside the old walls.
As I wanted to visit Laos, the availability
of a cheap, $74 flight from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang made the
decision easy and I bought a ticket.
