10-30 March 2003
Hello again from Thailand.

I am finally heading home. I fly out of Bangkok on China Airline Flight 66 at 13:30 my Sunday and arrive the same day in Los Angeles at noon California time. How about that for time zone jumping? I should make it back up the mountain to Big Bear Lake the same day on the last Marta Bus out of San Bernardino. So... soon it will be cools-ville for me. And just in the nick of time; I think my radiator is broken, though my new brighter eye is functioning splendidly. The old cell phone should be working again by Monday... same (805)252-9749 number.

Peace,

Fred Bellomy

PS: Like most of you, I am deeply distressed by the violence in Iraq. I recall the t-shirt I saw on a teenager in Jordan: "The only thing worth dying for is living." And, so many young people are dying there today. I am no fan of Saddam Hussein's, in fact I agree he continues to exacerbate the turmoil in Palestine with his moral and financial support ($25 thousand for suicide bomber families) of the extremist Arab elements in that troubled land. Still, like the majority of world leaders, I feel we should have exhausted all non-violent options before allowing our exasperation to lead us into military action.

Sometime ago I suggested the allies were playing a game of "good cop - bad cop." I still think that is what happened, only the bad cop got impatient and cut short the behind the scene efforts of the good cops. At that time I had faith the good cops would prevail. With all the young blood flowing, I continue to hope the more sensible members of the Bush administration will take note of the awful harm our current foreign policy has done to American prestige and influence around the world and devise a strategy for extracting our country from the fool's errand on which we have embarked. It is long past time to begin putting the long term best interests of the entire world ahead of selfish American
Interests. Nothing short of America's moral authority is at stake.

Here in Southeast Asia allied friendly leaders are disgusted with American hegemony and often say so publicly. In their expressed views, our social-economic-cultural-military world dominance interferes with their own national developments. Prior to my extended stay in this part of the world, I rarely gave any thought to American hegemony... actually had to look up the word to be sure of its precise meaning. Indonesians, Malaysians don't have that problem. It is time for thoughtful Americans to do some lateral thinking. When the least of us suffers, we all are diminished.

The following screened websites I have studied offer relevant information about the situation in the Middle East.
